Seller: nigel315 (3,318) 100%, Location: St Boswells, Melrose, Borders, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 173988452729 Pre-Columbian Mayan clay spindle whorl / button. Provenance This clay pre-Columbian Mayan button was a gift to my father from the Scottish artist William Johnstone (1897-1981). Where he got it from I have no idea. I was always given to believe this was a button but research suggests it may be a spindle whorl. It has a typical ‘Sun/calendar’ type decoration. According to Maya worldview, the Sun's cyclical journey across the sky, through the underworld, and back again began with the whirling of a spindle. 10th/15th century. Dimensions: 2.7cm diameter x 1.1cm thick Weight: 6.9gms Condition: Good antiquity, some slight damage (see photographs). Good patina.
