Description
Ca. 500 AD – 800 AD. Polychrome decorated bowl, likely from the Maya area in Guatemala. The bowl sits on a pedestal or ring foot, common for that area. The rim and base have two black band registers, the bowl-face is painted in shades of reddish brown, black and light brown. A seated figure with an extended arm and a wave-like object is being thrown-out as if casting a fishing net. This image appears twice on the bowl and fully encompasses the entire surface. The interior of the bowl is black.
Provenance: Purchased at auction in 2015.
Ships with display stand.
Condition
Extensive root marks over the surface of the bowl combined with evidence of mineral deposits attest to burial. Miscellaneous pitting and pigment loss. Small chips to the bottom edges of the pedestal (ring) were repaired, else intact.
