GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: Linea Vieja, Central Atlantic Watershed, Costa Rica NOTICE OF THE SCALE OF THE CERAMIC VESSELS: All of the vessels with the exception of #6, the tripod footed bowl, are miniaturized and are often referred to in auction catalogues and other publications as ceremonial bowl. It is thought that they may have been used in rites of passage and/or in shamanic rituals and may have contained intoxicants used by shamans. OBJECT 1: - A hard green stone tear-shaped axe head or weapon with dark inclusions. DIMENSIONS: height: 4; width: 2 1/2; thickness: 3/4 (inches) CONDITION: Fine- Whole and undamaged OBJECT 2: - A shallow burnished Red Ware tripod footed bowl with a shallow base, low shoulder, slightly tapered neck, and flared rim. The rim is enhanced by three sets of three rounded applied pellets placed at equal distances around the rim. The three conical feet are hollow and pierced and have small-incised tic decorations on the front, visible surfaces. DIMENSIONS: height: 3; diameter: 3 (inches) CONDITION: Good to Fine- The vessel is whole and intact with the only damage being a pressure crack on one side that initiates at the rim. OBJECT 3: - A rounded Plain Ware jar with a restricted neck and flared rim. Two thick strap handles appear on either side of the vessel and spring from the shoulder and attach to the direct rim. Sand or ground stone temper gives the surface a rough appearance and the piece has been blackened by fire. DIMENSIONS: height: 3; diameter: 5 (inches) CONDITION: Fine- Whole and intact with only a very minor chip bellow the rim on one side. OBJECT 4: - An avian effigy Red Ware jar with a rounded body, restricted neck and out-rolled rim. A bird head is molded an applied to the rim on one side and is pierced where the beak touches the vessel to form a suspension hole. Raised stylized wings appear on either side of the vessel along the shoulder of the jar and rounded slab attaches at the rear to form the tail of the bird. The rim, neck interior, base, top of the bird's head, the wings, and tail are burnished while the rest of the vessel is a mat finish. DIMENSIONS: height: 4 1/2; diameter: 4 1/2 (inches) CONDITION: Fine- Whole and Intact with no surface damage. OBJECT 5: - A Red Ware human face effigy pitcher with a rounded base, thickly rounded shoulder, slightly flaring neck, and a direct rim. A thick strap handle is attached to the rim and shoulder of the vessel opposite of the human face that is created from modeled and applied ceramic forms attached to the upper shoulder of the vessel. These consist of flared and pierced ears that frame a raised coffee bean-shape mouth, crescent-shaped nose with nostrils, coffee bean-shaped eyes, and arched eyebrows that meet at the top of the nose. The eyebrows are elaborated with a series of circular indentions that are very typical decoration in this style of ceramic. The vessel is burnished except for the applications of the ceramic face. DIMENSIONS: height: 3 1/2; diameter: 4 1/2 (inches) CONDITION: Good to Fine- the vessel is whole and intact with the only damage being a chip or loss of ceramic on the back side of the right ear, which may have happened during the Prehistoric firing process since it does not appear to be a break. It seems more like a piece of ceramic that popped off during the firing. There is also a very minor -hardly visible- pressure crack below the right ear. OBJECT 6: - A Brown Ware (also called Chocolate Ware and the coloration of this vessel is a reddish brown) tripod bowl with abstract zoomorphic legs. The form of the bowl consists of a shallow rounded base, a sharp angular shoulder, nearly vertical neck and direct rim. Three panel’s bands appear at equal distances around the neck and stretch from below the rim to the angular shoulder. The panel bands are subdivided into three sections and feature fine line incised patterning mostly of parallel vertical and horizontal lines. The central panels feature diamond motifs and appended triangles. Each panel band is framed by a series of small-incised dots or "V" shaped motives. It is difficult what animal is represented by the feet -they could be avian or reptilian or both. The feet are large and hollow and the form of each is reminiscent of an open duck's beak. A large circular ceramic bead is applied on the upper side of above and below the upper beak flange as well. DIMENSIONS: height: 4 1/2; diameter: 8 (inches) CONDITION: Good to Fine- the vessel is Whole and intact with the only damage being two fine pressure cracks that initiate at the rim. OBJECT 7: - A Red Ware conical footed double jar with applied ceramic decorations is in the from of two identical jars with rounded bases, thick rounded shoulders, restricted necks and slightly flared rims. The pair of jars is connected at the top of the curve of their bases and bottom curve of their rims by a thick hollow passage. Each has a pair if conical legs and they are formed tipping slightly away from one another, which is visually appealing. Their applied decoration is identical and consists of abstract zoomorphic figures that may represent frogs or even tadpoles that are placed on opposite sides of the forms length on the upper shoulders of the jars. These appear as rounded faces with coffee beans eyes and mouth and what appear to be pairs of incised feet on either side of the head; an applied coil with diagonal incised marks extends downward from the base of the heads. Vertical incised lines bracket the two zoomorphic effigies. Applied coils with diagonal incised marks similar to those on the effigy figures appear on either side of each vessel and extend from the base of the neck to the shoulder DIMENSIONS: height: 3; width: 6; depth: 3 (inches) CONDITION: Good - The vessel is intact with vertical pressure crack where the two vessels connect. Both rims are chipped and there is a chip out of the back of one of the conical feet. The applied decorations are intact and in fine condition as is most of the surface of the vessel. OBJECT 8: - A stylized hollow Red Ware human head that has an interior ceramic pellet to form a rattle and may have also been used as a whistle. The piece is actually a foot broken from a footed vessel. However, it is thought that such object were often kept and used as amulets rather than being discarded. The face is a long tapered triangular form. The eyes are thin rectangular slits with similar vertical slit pierced below the ovoid mouth ands similar piercing appears on either side of the checks. A thick nose with flared nostrils descends between the eyes and circular in dentations appear on the outer edges of the eyes. Below the chin on what may be the neck is a pair or ideated rectangles. DIMENSIONS: height: 3; width: 2; depth: 2 (inches) CONDITION: Fine- The amulet is whole and intact. OBJECT 9: - A Red Ware rounded jar with a hemispheric base, thickly rounded shoulder, restricted tall flared neck, and slightly out-rolled rim has three applied heads with pairs of arms and hands placed at tri-points around the base of the neck. The raised three-dimensional heads may be abstract human or monkey forms due to the hands having incised fingers. Above the heads an attached to the rim are a series of three circular pellets with vertical incised marks. The surface of the vessel is lightly burnished. DIMENSIONS: height: 21/2; diameter: 3 (inches) CONDITION: Good- The vessel is whole and excellent condition except for damage at the rim that is mostly on one side with a couple of applied rim decorations missing from the opposite side.
