Seller: tjtoolie (4,570) 100%, Location: Royersford, Pennsylvania, Ships to: US, Item: 272915486134 From my medical collection: Here we have a Post Civil War Era, Surgeon's Single - Edged Amputation Catalin Knife with Ebony Handle. The style and materials of construction indicate that this is probably a post-Civil War era (late 1800's) instrument. Unfortunately, it is not maker marked which would have assisted in narrowing the dating. This is an example of a long single edged amputation blade used to cut through tissue and muscle before a limb was amputated. This was manufactured "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood, bone, or gutta-percha (a hard rubber). This appears to be an ebony handle and it has a nice cross-hatched surface. There is a short tight hairline crack near the blade (see pics) but the handle appears to be tight on the blade. There are only a few other very minor scratches and nicks. The metal parts of the knife are in very good condition with the exception of cutting edge nicks near the handle end (see pics). The knife is 12-1/4"L. These knives were usually found included in Civil War 'Capital' Surgical Sets, which had a large compliment of instruments and used in the very rear area of a battle region or in a hospital (large fine mahogany crafted cases with specific spaces for each instrument). ** Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
