A grand ship, the ill-fated Empress of Ireland was built in Glasgow by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering. She was launched in 1906 and made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Quebec on June 29 of that year. She served on the Liverpool-Canada service her entire career.Built for the Canadian Pacific Line, the Empress, early in the morning of May 29, 1914, eastbound from Quebec, encountered dense fog on the St. Lawrence River and after an approaching ship was sighted, she put her engines astern (full reverse). Despite last-minute evasive action by both vessels, the 440-foot 6,028-ton Norwegian collier Storstad struck the Empress broadside, between her funnels, and she immediately began to list. The damage to the Empress was so great that her watertight doors could not be closed. In addition, she had no power so she couldn't be beached and only four lifeboats could be launched. Barely 15 minutes after the collision, the Empress of Ireland was on the bottom of the river with over 1,000 deaths. In addition to 172 crew members, 840 passengers died, the largest number of passenger fatalities of any non-war related maritime accident.
