Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of the original Grand Casino in 2005. It was closed from August 2005 to August 2006. The Grand Casino was replaced by Harrahs Gulf Coast Casino in 2014. Gambling chips are used at casinos and clubs as a money substitute in the playing of card and other games. They first appeared in the 1920s or 1930s. The chips are about silver dollar size and of a plastic or hard clay-like composition. The chips of gambling casinos are well made, usually with a design in relief aroun the border. Some chips have the casino's name and the value hot-stamped in gold lettering. Other chips have a multicolored legend or scene on a white center, or a central metallic insert. And many have color stripes or inserts going across the edge. All these features make the chips harder to counterfeit. In addition, most casinos periodically change their chip designs, resulting in many types and varieties of chips being issued from a single casino over the years.Country/Region of Manufacture:United States
