Seller: bronz4yew (870) 100%, Location: Fareham, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 223170238020 This is the classic form of the Late Bronze Age oval socket Sub-Carpathian axe. 436g. 140mm long x 55mm wide edge, the parting lines have been hammered down with a light, round-faced hammer. The oval socket is clean and well-defined, 78mm deep. The three-V raised decoration ribs to the cheeks is typical and fine. The loop is light and springs from the bold, strong, chamfered collar. The carefully-worked mouth is typical of these axes. The 'good' cheek shows evidence of much polishing. Below this can be seen the hammer prints from the drawing-down to harden the cutting edge. This has produced the slight flare. The oxidised/bronze cheek would benefit from light, careful, wet-cleaning. Old corner chip to blade from slight 'over-bite' hafting. Rare to get this type of axe in such a good and clean condition. From my own collection of good originals, from which I made silicone moulds and usable reproductions for experimental archaeology projects. Freepost UK. Overseas please ask. Condition: Sub-Carpathian-type, decorated, oval socket looped axe in very good condition. Hoard find, mid 1980's. One cheek is like polished green silk. The other has slight oxide accretion and clean bronze. From the 'as new' condition of the bronze, it looks to have been a watery, anaerobic deposit., Colour: sound green patina, Provenance: surface find in a ploughed field, Material: Bronze, Type: LBA square socket axe
