Antique Hammond Multiplex Typewriter Complete (ca. 1915) This WW1 era typewriter is an incredible find and amazing beautiful for anyone who is looking for a sublime piece of art from the long ago past to display or use in their practice. This typewriter came out of an old estate home in North Vancouver and I bought it from an auction. I had to have it but now am moving so looking to give it to a new home. It comes complete with original case (rare). Although the Hammond name has worn off with time, for being over 100 years old and from the World War One era, it is in incredible shape. Really really cool piece. Grab this for your shop, office, desk, coffee shop, business or wherever you want to have an unimaginable conversation piece! The Hammond Multiplex typewriter, introduced in 1915, was a notable model produced by the Hammond Typewriter Company. It was an innovative and unique machine that deviated from the traditional design of typewriters of the time. Here's some information about the Hammond Multiplex typewriter: Type Wheel Design: The Hammond Multiplex utilized a type wheel mechanism instead of the traditional type bars found in other typewriters. The type wheel, which had characters engraved on its circumference, rotated and struck the inked ribbon against the paper to create the desired letter. Interchangeable Type Wheels: One of the key advantages of the Hammond Multiplex was its ability to switch between different typefaces and sizes. Users could easily change the type wheel to switch from one font style to another, allowing for greater versatility in typing. Double Keyboard: The Multiplex featured two sets of keys, allowing for both uppercase and lowercase letters to be typed without using the shift key. This design innovation aimed to improve typing speed and reduce the strain on typists' fingers. Variable Line Spacing: Another notable feature of the Hammond Multiplex was its variable line spacing capability. Users could adjust the line spacing to accommodate different paper sizes or formatting preferences. Portability: The Hammond Multiplex was relatively compact and lightweight compared to other typewriters of the time. This made it more portable and easier to transport. Popularity and Impact: The Hammond Multiplex typewriter garnered attention for its unique design and functionality. It was particularly popular among professional typists, journalists, and businesses that valued its ability to switch fonts and sizes effortlessly. It's worth noting that while the Hammond Multiplex typewriter was technologically advanced for its time, it ultimately faced competition from other typewriter manufacturers and newer innovations in the industry. As a result, the Hammond Typewriter Company ceased production in the 1920s, and the Multiplex typewriter became a collectible item for typewriter enthusiasts and collectors.
