The map shows wagon roads, the Pony Express Route, Santa Fe Trail, Indian villages, copper mines, counties, cities, towns, and the proposed route of the railroad to the Pacific. It labels tribal lands and reservations of the Kickapoo, Osage, Ottawa, Potawatomi, Iowa, Kansas, Sac & Fox, Peoria & Kaskaskia, Cherokee, and other Native American peoples. Among the named places and features are New Madrid, Council Grove, Fort Leavenworth, Oskaloosa, Versailles, Potosi, St. Louis, Springfield, Doniphan, Humboldt, Independence, Wyandotte, Chiilicothe, Emporia, Cottonwood Falls, Ohio City, Ozark, and Fort Riley.
