Up for sale is a lithograph titled "MAIN CHAIN OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, AS SEEN FROM THE EAST, - EXTENDING FROM A POINT NORTH OF THE MARIAS PASS TO NEAR THE LITTLE BLACKFOOT PASS" by John Mix Stanley (1814-1872).  The lithograph was created by the expedition painter and survey artist of the American West for the Pacific Railroad Surveys. It was printed by the New York lithographic company of Sarony, Major and Knapp employing multiple printings in both tones and colors between 1853 and 1855. This lithograph (along with 69 others) was removed from the following book:  House of Representatives - 36th Congress, 1st Session - REPORTS OF EXPLORATIONS AND SURVEYS, to Ascertain The Most Practicable and Economical Route For a Railroad From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean.  Made under the direction of the Secretary of War, in 1853-5, According to Acts of Congress of March 3, 1853, May 31, 1854, and August 5, 1854.  VOLUME XII - Book I.  This volume was part of the northernmost survey, commanded by Isaac I. Stevens, which explored the terrain along the 47th parallel, from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast.  The lithographs created from these surveys were published in twelve large volumes between 1855 and 1860 by the War Department. A famous Indian painter and survey artist, John Mix Stanley began his career in Detroit in 1834 as a painter of houses and signs.  In 1853, he was commissioned as the artist for the Northern Railroad Survey, which explored a possible transcontinental route along the 47th and 49th parallels.  Today, the famous art of John Mix Stanley is included in such collections as the Smithsonian Institution, the Detroit Art Institute, Buffalo Historical Society and the Honolulu Museum of Art. This lithograph measures approxiately 9 X 23 1/2", including the border area.  The actual picture is approximately 20 1/2" x 5 1/2".  It is blank of the reverse side. It is generally in Fair Condition. There is some wear and browning to the engraving, as well as some moderate foxing - and some of it affects the actual picture.  There is a "water" stain across the top edge.  There are a few nicks and creases on the left edge.  There is a tear in the bottom left corner.  The left edge was where it was cut from the Survey Report and the holes are from where it was originally bound.  There are also creases in the picture from where it was folded in the Report. This lithograph is a great piece of American history that will look VERY NICE when framed!  Please note that while I have included pictures of the "Title Page" and the "Letter to the Secretary of War" page from the book that this lithograph was taken from, they are NOT included in the sale, as they are reference pieces to determine authenticity for the other lithographs. I would be happy to include a copy if requested, but this sale is for the 1 page lithograph ONLY. Other dings here and there.  Please see my store for other great items.  Inventory R-36
