Seller: Top-Rated Plus Seller new_world_maps (21,608) 100%, Location: Lake Worth, Florida, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 223493607971 Original copperplate engraved 1841 antique map of Long Island Sound, from New York City to Block Island, printed more than 178 years ago. It shows soundings, with depths in fathoms, and it locates lighthouse, light ships, and prominent features along the coasts of Connecticut and the northern shore of Long Island. Among the specific named places on the map are Montauk Point (spelled Montock), Gardiner's Bay, Mamaroneck, Stonington, New London, Rye Point, Riker's Island, Huntington Bay, Shelter Island, Outer Thimble, Cranes Neck, New Rochelle, Middle Ground Light Ship, Bridgeport, New Haven, Wading River, and Little Gull Island Light. The map was engraved by William Hooker and published by Edmund and George W. Blunt in the 14th edition of The American Coast Pilot, New York, 1841. The image area measures 19.1 x 45 cm [7½" x 17¾"], and the map is dated 1841 just inside the neat line at the lower edge. Condition: It is in very good condition, with no marks, rips, or tears. The impression is a bit faint, and the map is uncolored, with four vertical folds, as issued. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint. It is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It had been issued in a folded format, but it has been stored flat for many years, and we will ship it to you carefully rolled in a sturdy tube. The Blunts were among the earliest surveyors of the U.S. coast line, in many instances preceding the official surveys of the young government. Their charts are avidly sought by collectors.
