Old Pawn 880 to 890 Silver; RARE Snake Symbol Use w/Eagle Navajo Letter Opener
I have for sale a 880 to 890 silver Native American letter opener. Most likely made from ingot silver. As you can see from the photographs, this shows very light wear and some nominal damage at the tip that will/should be professionally restored. For all intents and purposes, it is basically near coin silver and shows clear signs of being hand worked with relevant imperfections - please use the photographs to come to your own conclusions.
The grip portion of the letter opener is a snake (a very rare symbol to find used in a piece like this) rising up to touch the eagle. At the head of the letter opener is the eagle symbol with a cabochon turquoise stone measuring 5.5mm x 4.3mm - due to the mounting I cannot determine the depth.
The total length of this item is 6 1/2", it is 11.16mm at its widest on the blade, and the eagle is right at 15.12mm wide. The thickness varies, bit the blade bit is about 1.83mm thick and the grip is about 1.95mm thick.
The Navajo consider the eagle to represent courage, wisdom and strength with a purpose of being the messenger to the creator. The snake can represent speed and swiftness. A well thought out combination for this piece. It is unsigned and has no metal mark.
This piece is in what I consider to be acceptable pre-owned condition and has been x-ray tested for metal make-up to confirm the metal content of the silver.
I typically do not polished silver pieces and leave that to the new owner to decide. This piece would make a outstanding addition to your collection.
