Greco Buddhism Artifact, Bodhisattva Buddha Head from the Ancient Gandhara/Gandharan Region. The sculpture is a master piece with Hellenistic art in Asia. It presents female Bodhisattva Buddha. In the ancient time, the female Buddha was adopted by some schools of Mahayana Buddhist. The female Buddha was counterpart of the cosmic Buddha, representing Buddha's wisdom and complementing Buddha's compassion. The item exhibits third eye on the forehead (symbol of wisdom awakening), curly hair, head dress, ear ring ornament of the noble, and small trace of poly-chrome paints on the headdress. The surface is slightly corroded and the nose is broken off at tip -- this can happen given its age of 1,500 years. The item was made from stucco. Using of stucco had been mastered by the Roman Empire and reached Gandharan area through the ancient silk road that linked Europe and Asia. Referred to the Book: The Art of Gandhara in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, starting from 4th Century A.D., trade and power had shift from Pakistan area to Afghanistan area. In Afghanistan, as they were building new trading posts, new monasteries, they chose to build more statues with stucco than with carving stones.
