Seller: yeoldebadgershoppe (213) 100%, Location: Charlottesville, Virginia, Ships to: US, Item: 162641870259 A really nice Akan "figural" goldweight, depicting a woman carrying a pot of water on her head! Made of brass or bronze, nearly six inches tall, and weighs 177 grams. According to Tom Phillips in his book African Goldweights: Miniature Sculptures from Ghana, 1400-1900, the figural style of Akan goldweights were often sculpted to illustrate Akan proverbs; hence, these weights are known as "proverb weights" or "proverb stones." Most figural weights were crafted after 1900, and are still crafted by artists in Ghana today.A great addition to your collection!
