This fantastic and unique painted rawhide hand drum stretched on a wooden frame. It has a pictorial motifs applied to the top and side surfaces. Tribal affiliation is Sioux tribe. It has been acquired in 2011 with COA. Previous owner said, this Native American Plains Indian Drum with direction markings and red hand on surface has been examined by the staff consultants for Allegro Nontroppo Gallery and found to be a genuine and antique American Indian artifact drum, dating from turn of the century and possibly earlier to late 1880’s to Pine Ridge Reservation Era of American Indian reservation internment.This drum measures 16 inches diameter and 6 inches deep and is covered in hide which is intact. Following is a summary of the drum's symbols and mythology. Markings The top of drum has a painted red hand.This symbolizes powerful medicine.There are 3 kinds of medicine in American Plains Indian mythology, being Good medicine, Strong medicine, and Powerful medicine.Due to their captivity, this hand can be seen as an invocation of the strongest medicine for their situation. The late 1880’s was the time of the Ghost Dance, a heroic time of self sacrifice in the warrior spirit.The cross hatching represents the 4 directions.The black line is the Hard road running East and West.The green line is the Good road running North and South.The red area of intersection represents the Tree that flowered, a time of peace and prosperity. The drum is largely intact. A new leather lace has been added at bottom to insure the continued integrity of the drum skin, and is not original.
