Lladro History

Lladró was founded in 1953 when Juan, José, and Vicente, three brothers born of local farmers and endowed with great artistic talent, formed a small family company in the Valencian village of Almácera, Spain. Since then, Lladró has undergone an amazing metamorphosis from an artisan workshop to a huge firm of international scope enjoying continual growth. The company management has remained in the hands of the Lladró family, the owners of the firm, since its inception.

The creative team started out by adapting styles from past eras, but it was not long before certain characteristics appeared that would soon shape what was to become the unique Lladró style.

Process of creation

Every Lladró piece of work is the result of a laborious artistic process. Sculptors follow their own inspiration but also perform, if the work requires it, a meticulous process of research and documentation. This is often the case with pieces or collections that reflect other cultures.

Every Lladro creation begins with an artistic inspiration. The sculptor then makes the first sketch of the new figure in clay, which is examined and approved by the Creativity Committee, made up by many members, one of whom comes from the Lladró family. The sketch, in clay, is reproduced in plaster to provide the first mold, which will in turn become the definitive mold for the porcelain figurine. A mid-sized figurine may need between 15 and 20 molds and up to 300 for complex pieces. The fragments coming from these molds are joined by liquid porcelain paste to obtain an exact reproduction of the original model.

Decorating

Once the figurine is reconstructed, the decoration process is started. In compliance with the sculptor’s instructions and the smooth surface of the piece it is carved with delicate motifs that will give it its final appearance. At this point, the face on the sculpture gets its expression with the tiniest details and delicately crafting. In addition, the figurine is painted. If it requires a glossy finish, it is later covered with a coat of varnish which gives it that crystalline look that is so characteristic of Lladró. Many Lladró sculptures display one of the most valued and differentiating features of their works: flowers. Each one is fully made, petal by petal, following a very delicate process to obtain a unique, unrepeatable creation. David Lladro, son of Vincente, says the company “creates sculptures with soul that celebrate life and have feelings".

Test Of Fire

Now the sculpture is finally put to the test of fire: it remains for approximately 24 hours in the kiln at over 1300º C. Porcelain vitrifies, varnish crystallises and Lladró’s true colors, thus far hidden, come to the surface.

After the crafting process is finished, the sculpture goes through several quality control checks. Most pieces successfully make their way to the end of the process, but those that do not comply with Lladró’s quality standards are then destroyed.

The Craftsmen

A large team of craftsmen contribute to developing Lladró sculptures, making each of them unique: painters, ornamentalists, flower artists… All of them pool their knowledge and expertise to create a piece with the highest artistic and technical quality. Lladro porcelain is still made by hand and each piece is given individual care and special attention to detail.

Collector's Society

In 1986 Lladro established a Collector's Society with their first piece called “Little Pals.” That figure was a huge success and every year since a special piece is made and only offered to society members.
