Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this original hand-made heirloom Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. The
blade represents the opportunity to own a historic Gendaito katana by the well-known swordsmith Shimazaki Yasuoki from the famous Yasukuni school certified with NBTHK Hozon papers, and with
high end Shin Gunto mounts that include a family
mon and tassel on the handle. This is a special sword that has it
all for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
The blade and the mountings are both in MINTY condition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length
of 25.25 inches (64cm). It shows a ko-mokume
hada that is tight and well-crafted. The hamon is a Rai-style ko-choji based on suguha that is present the length of the blade ending in a maru boshi. The nioi guchi
showcases fine nie that descend into the hamon and there are activities
like ko-ashi in and around the hamon.
The tang is signed Yasuoki
and dated Showa Jyu Shichi Nen Ichi
Gatsu Kichi Jitsu, or a lucky day in January 1942. Yasuoki was a very well-regarded gendaito swordsmith of the famous Yasukuni school. The Yasukuni school was a group of thirteen
swordsmiths chosen to make high quality gendaito on the grounds of the Yasukuni
shrine during the pre-war and war years. Yasukuni swords are sought out for
their exceptional craftsmanship. The blade also comes with NBTHK Hozon papers attetsting to the authenticity and quality
of the blade.
The mountings are Type 98 Shin
Gunto and in MINTY condition.
The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is little to
no fraying. The tsuka also shows a family mon
along the backstrap. The mon is the famous takanoha ,
or hawk feathers, used by clans such as the Abe .
There is also a rare leather weathering cover included to cover
the tsuka and it shows some cracking from time. The tsuba is classic WW2 with a
complete set of eight accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is green
painted metal with a leather weathering cover. The leather cover is in
outstanding condition, showing very little missing finish and retaining roughly
98-99% finish. It is assumed the
metal saya underneath also retains 98-99% of it’s original finish. The blade
also comes with a custom made shirasaya mounting to protect the blade and a
wooden tsunagi insert for the Shin Gunto mounts. The blade is in MINTY condition. There are no
nicks, little to no rust, and few, if any scratches. There are no major flaws
like hagire.
Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, desirability of Yasukuni swords, NBTHK papers, reputation of the
swordsmith, and outstanding condition of the blade and mounts, I highly recommend this sword to a
collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
