Seller: aerowallah (3,542) 100%, Location: Owls Head, Maine, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 192586933053 Beautiful and elaborate Corinthian-style helmet made of gilded bronze, probably in the style of a high-ranking naval officer, with its stylized sea bird worked into the helmet's crest. The body of the helmet is decorated with floral and feather motifs, and twin lions which may refer to the Lion Gate at the bronze-age citadel of Mycenae. The helmet is a very heavy lost-wax casting made from the original helmet, most likely by a museum curator during the early or mid 1800s. It was the practice then in an era of limited budgets for museums to copy their treasures and trade with other institutions to augment their collections. The helmet was originally cast in four sections and then brazed together and gilded. It weighs over 10 lbs, and measures almost 18 inches high. It's footprint is about 11 x 7 inches. The provenance of this piece is that it was an American veteran's war souvenir from WWII. Overall in fine condition with almost 100% gilding intact. It makes a very striking display piece. Professional packing and expedited/insured postage free. Material: Bronze
