THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST LATE 16TH OR VERY EARLY 17TH CENTURY CARVED SMALL LIVERY CUPBOARDS WE HAVE EVER OWNED. A MUSEUM QUALITY LATE 16TH OR VERY EARLY 17TH CENTURY PILGRIM CENTURY CARVED HANGING "LIVERY" CUPBOARD WITH THE BEST CARVED FRONT DOOR WITH A "TRIPLE TUDOR ROSE AND A STAG" WITH ITS ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT BUTTERFLY HINGES. ALL IN HAND HEWN OAK WITH LARGE TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL GRUNGY PAINTED SURFACE STILL INTACT, England, Circa 1580-1620 in Oak. THIS IS THE BEST LATE 16TH OR EARLY 17TH CENTURY HANGING LIVERY CUPBOARD WE HAVE HAD IN OVER THIRTY YEARS. LIVERY CUPBOARDS WERE EITHER HUNG ON THE WALL OR PLACED ON THE TOP OF A TABLE AND USED TO STORE FOOD AND FOOD STUFF IN THE EARLY PERIODS. VERY FEW HAVE SURVIVED. THIS IS A VERY EARLY EXAMPLE, BEING ALL HAND HEWN AND DATES TO AROUND 1580-1620. IT IS MADE OF VERY THICK HEWN ENGLISH OAK. THIS PIECE MUST HAVE BEEN SENT HERE TO THE COLONIES VERY EARLY IN ITS LIFE AS THE BACK TO THIS CUPBOARD, WHICH WAS REPLACED IN THE 17TH CENTURY IS OF FIRST GROWTH AMERICAN EASTERN WHITE PINE, AND THERE IS NO BUG DAMAGE AT ALL. I WOULD GUESS THIS CAME OVER IN ONE OF THE FIRST FEW SETTLEMENTS. THE DOOR HAS THE BEST CARVED TRIPLE TUDOR ROSE ON ONE SIDE AND A WONDERFUL CARVED STAG ON THE OTHER SIDE. IT RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT BUTTERFLY HINGES. THE INTERIOR SHELF IS REPLACED IN THE 18TH CENTURY. THE SURFACE IS AN OLD WASHED DOWN SURFACE WITH TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF THE ORIGINAL GRUNGY DARK PAINT STILL REMAINING. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE SURVIVOR THAT IS IN GREAT CONDITION AND THE BEST OLD SURFACE. I DOUBT YOU WILL EVER FIND SUCH A PRESERVED PILGRIM CENTURY JOINED HANGING LIVERY CUPBOARD FOR SALE. 19 1/2" wide, 20 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" deep.
