This is a 20.1 gram etched part  slice of the Muonionalusta Meteorite. The muonionalusta was first found in Kiruna Norrbotten Sweden in 1906. It is a fine octahedrite. There have been many more pieces found in recent times. The Muonionalusta is very hard to cut and usually only comes in very large pieces. 

 

        This piece measures about 38.2mm X 32.8mm X 1.8-2.5mm

                                                                                           IMCA  member #2232 These meteorites are found buried very deep at times, they have been found deeper than 5 feet, which is very deep for a meteorite to be found. They are found using deep seeking Pulse induction metal detectors, like the Pulse star 2 or the Lorenz. These machines come with coils up to 80 inches, so they are very deep seeking. The Muonionalusta has been in the ground a long time and shows signs of weathering from the outside in. The etch is a fine octahedrite just like Gibeon. But if you look at a slice of Muonionalusta around the natural edge, you will see dark material moving into the etch from the outside edge. If you look at a Gibeon slice in the same area it will be bright shiny metal all the way to very outside edge. The Muonionalusta Meteorite is very hard to cut, it is very hard and wears out band saw blades very quickly. It costs more in blades to cut than a lot of softer meteorites, it also takes a long time to make a slice. So even thought the meteorite is less expensive per gram to buy. The cutting process is very expensive in blades and time. Another point about this meteorite is that it mostly comes as large round pieces. A smaller piece is about 10 kilos and many of them are over 50 kilos. So they are not very desirable to sit in a collection as a whole specimen. The etch is said to be even better than Gibeon by many people and as you can see it is a very nice etch. If you would like to search within our many great items. I started out many years ago as a meteorite hunter, Gold basin in Arizona is where I got my start. With help from family and friends I helped find the Franconia strewn field. I have found many Canyon Diablo Irons, a few on Dry lakes, but that is not where I spent my time. I am best known for my hunting work at Glorieta, where I was truly blessed to find half a dozen big pieces. I have been on successful hunts for fresh falls as well, West Texas which is now Ash Creek. And Coloma CA, which now known as Sutters mill. I hunted Admire and found some of that pallasite, and I have been skunked as many times or more than the rest of the hunters. We didn't want all of our eggs in one basket.  We are meteorite cutters, we specilize in cutting iron meteorites, but we cut a lot of pallasites as well  now a days. We will cut your meteorites if the conditions are right. If the meteorite is too expensive we are normally not the right cutter and if the meteorite is too common and cheap we are not the right cutter. We normally cut meteorites that are between $3 and $12 per gram. It can vary somewhat, but that is the normal range. We take 30-35% of finished product. Now for a little explanation of how we actually cut and return your material fairly. We do not just pick out the nicest slices for our cutting work. We first grade the material, say if we cut a pallasite. We end up with three or more grades. We hold each piece up to the light and put each grade into a pile, three grades would usually be something like a small pile of wow pieces, a large group of somewhat translucent, or average pieces and then a zero translucent pile. Now we weigh each pile and divide by .30 to get the amount we are owed of each pile. We do not hold them up and grade them again, we simply scoop our weight off the pile, fist the wow pile then the average pile, the the low grade pile. That way you get a fair representation and so do we.   We have an outstanding reputation for preparing material that is stable, we take many steps in our process to ensure that the meteorites we are cutting are as stable as possible when we are finished.
