From the Old Private Collection This is an Extremely rare, museum quality authentic artifact (circa early 1800s). The Item is about 12 3/4" x 6" in excellent antique condition. The Baule represent one of the most important tribes of the Ivory Coast. Their name is testimony to their birth – according to legend, Queen Awura Pokou led her people on an exodus towards the gold-mining areas during the 17th century and had to cross a river where she was obliged to sacrifice her son to the river god, thus giving her people the name Bauli, ‘the son is dead’. The male descendant of Awura Pokou still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. The Baule created art in several media, including gold and bronze casting similar to their Asante ancestors, wooden sculpture, mask and figure carving, which have been greatly influenced by their Senufo and Guro neighbors. Because Baule artisans freely choose, as opposed to inheriting their occupation, it can also be said Baule art is defined by rugged individualism and a sense of artistic freedom rather than restraint. Baule carvers are still very active today. With their great sense of stylization and attention to detail, they have produced some of the most elegant objects of all African art. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region, it is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass and bronze with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing temperatures to prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronze works found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu.
