The language is syllabic, consisting of around 200 signs: 87 syllabic and 100 logographic. The language was used by court scribes for administrative record-keeping purposes. The script was deciphered by Michael Ventris and John Chadwick. This example contains the earliest written reference to musicians, a pair of lyre players who were on the palace staff.
