MR PICKWICK FIGURAL BOTTLE WITH WHITE HART VINEGAR LABEL––

Thinning out our 40-year collection of labeled bottles and jars…   Fruit and product jars with labels add another dimension to these jars beyond just the jar design, the closure style, and glass manufacturer; the labels identify the companies who felt these jars were good enough to pack their products in, they tell us where the companies were located, and help date the particular jars.

This is an 8 3/4” tall, clear glass, cork-top, figural bottle, embossed MR. PICKWICK on the front heel.   The design patent for this piece, representing a man with tall hat, glasses, bow tie, and double-breasted coat. was registered by the U. S. Patent Office to Arthur F. Rowse of Lexington, Massachusetts, on April 14, 1936.

The bottle represents the Honorable Samuel Pickwick, Esq., one of the most loved literary personalities, introduced to the world in 1837 by Charles Dickens in the PICKWICK PAPERS.

The bottle’s label reads WHITE HART INN PURE CIDER VINEGAR MADE FROM FRESH APPLES FULL STRENGTH CONTENTS ONE PINT NEW ENGLAND VINEGAR WORKS SOMERVILLE, MASS.

The New England Vinegar Works had been located at 46 Clinton in Boston in 1917, but when the 1923-24 THOMAS REGISTER OF AMERICAN MANUFACTURES came out they were listed in Somerville as manufacturers of cider, sugar, and white distilled vinegar.   The New England Vinegar Works had planned, according to the September 1935 GLASS PACKER, to bring out a set of Dickens’ characters in glass, all for their White Hart Inn Vinegar; the White Hart Inn was where Mr. Pickwick met the notable Sam Weller, whom he subsequently hired as his valet.
