The Pineapple , concert-sized ukulele was first built in the 1920's. The very first "ukes" were made of koa wood, known back then as "Hawaiian Mahogany", but when manufacturers on the Mainland (such as Martin, Gibson, Washburn, Regal, Harmony, etc.) started to build ukuleles they made almost all of them out of mahogany. These were wonderful-sounding instruments and are highly valuable and sought-after to this day, especially in concert size. The Mele mahogany concert is almost an exact replica of a Martin concert; we were able to acquire copies of Martin's blueprints after they stopped building ukuleles back in the 70's. Many of our customers who play a tenor (26" long") ukulele professionally like to play their concert-sized uke at home and for fun, because it's highly portable and easy to play yet still sounds fabulous. A fabulous gift for yourself or someone special, the Mele solid mahogany, is entirely handmade, (as are all Mele Ukuleles) concert ukuleles offer great tone, intonation and playability. It will delight one and all for many, many years to come.
