( several illustrations from photographs are dated August - October, 1912 ) Nearly 110 Years Old A rare original publication, issued compliments of M. W. Savage and the International Stock Food Co., owner of world-famous harness racing horse Dan Patch. On the front cover is a color illustration showing Savage driving Dan Patch at a fast clip, kicking up dust as they race. Much information on the famous racing horse Dan Patch , on racing horses , and on other kinds of farm livestock. Numerous Illustrations , throughout. Frankly, this item belongs in a museum. --------------------- Harness horse Dan Patch ( 1896 - 1916 ), was a noted American Standardbred pacer. At a time when harness racing was one of the largest sports in the nation, Dan Patch was a major celebrity. He was undefeated in open competition.

Dan patch was so dominant on the racetrack that other owners eventually refused to enter their horses against him. Instead, he ended his racing career performing time trials, and traveled extensively on exhibition, earning millions of dollars in purses, attendance gate receipts, and product endorsements. The horse broke world speed records at least 14 times in the early 1900s. In 1905, he set a world's record for the fastest mile by a harness horse (1:551/4 ; 1 minute, 55 1/4 seconds ) that stood unmatched for over 30 years. Unofficially, Dan Patch broke this record in 1906 with a clocking of 1:55. When Dan patch died on July 11, 1916, his owner, Marion Willis Savage, died just one day later. Dan Patch was inducted into the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame in 1953 and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.

Entrepreneur owner Marion Willis Savage ( 1859 - 1916 ) had founded The International Stock Food Company in 1886 in Minneapolis , Minnesota.

Savage began his career as a drug store clerk in West Liberty, Iowa, where he first took an interest in the animal feed industry after interacting with farmers who frequented the store to buy animal feed and medicine. Savage moved to Minneapolis, which had thriving dairy and livestock industries, and started his company. Savage eventually opened a plant in Minneapolis in an old exposition building. His signature slogan to promote his feed was, "Three Feeds for One Cent." With success in Minnesota, Savage opened other plants in Memphis, Toronto, and even overseas in England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, and Russia. To further promote his business , and as a side hobby , Savage ventured into horse racing. His favorite horse was a stallion named Dan Patch, whom he had purchased in 1902. Dan Patch became a celebrity when he set the world record in 1906 at the Minnesota State Fair for pacing the fastest time in one mile. He held this record for decades. On July 11, 1916, Savage went into the hospital for minor surgery. At the same time, Dan Patch suffered an attack of colic and seemed to recover. But the horse then died of a sudden massive heart attack. Savage was notified, and took the news hard. He himself died on July 12, the next day, of a pulmonary embolism. The International Stock Food Company is still in business to this day as International Stock Food (ISF), currently based in Centralia, Ontario, Canada.
