US Mint version:

The 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Set, celebrates the contributions of the Native American Code Talkers during World Wars I and II. The 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Set is a wonderful pairing of a 2016 Native American $1 Coin from the U.S. Mint and a distinctive $1 note produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Struck at the San Francisco Mint with an enhanced uncirculated finish, the reverse (tails) design of the 2016 Native American $1 Coin features two helmets and two feathers that form a “V,” symbolizing victory, unity and the important role that code talkers played in World War I and World War II. It includes the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$1,” “WWI,” “WWII,” and “CODE TALKERS.” This coin is the eighth in the series of coins honoring Native Americans and the important contributions made by Native American tribes and individual Native Americans to the development and history of the United States.

The language and dialects of code talkers became our country’s secret means of communication, which was critical to winning the war. This marked the first time in modern warfare that transmission of messages in native languages was used for the purpose of confusing an enemy. This code was used extensively during the wars and proved to be unbreakable.

Navajo Code Talkers who served during World War II. Hundreds of American Indians joined the U.S. armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages to gain a tactical advantage. The military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent.

In WWI, Choctaw and other American Indians transmitted battle messages in their tribal languages by telephone. Although not used extensively, the WWI telephone squads played a key role in helping the U.S. Army win several battles in France that brought about the end of the war.

The Marine Corps recruited Navajo Code Talkers in 1941 and 1942. Philip Johnston was a WWI veteran who had heard about the successes of the Choctaw telephone squad. Johnston, although not Indian, had grown up on the Navajo reservation. In 1942, he suggested to the Marine Corps that Navajos and other tribes could be very helpful in maintaining communications secrecy. After viewing a demonstration of messages sent in the Navajo language, the Marine Corps was so impressed that they recruited 29 Navajos in two weeks to develop a code within their language. After the Navajo code was developed, the Marine Corps established a Code Talking school.

“Code Talkers,” as they came to be known after WWII, are 20th-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the U.S. and its allies. During WWII, about 420 Navajos served as Code Talkers—the most from any Native group.

The Navajo people call themselves the “Naabeeho´ Dine’é, or sometimes, Diné.” “Diné Bizaad” is the Navajo term for the Navajo language. Many Navajos still speak their language.

The $1 Series 2013 Note features a low serial number and is from one of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks located throughout the country. The pairing of this note with the Native American $1 Coin is a wonderful representation of the strength, history, and unity of our great nation.

The coin and note are housed in a tri–fold presentation folder containing historical information about the code talkers. Both sides of the coin and note can be seen within the packaging and a Certificate of Authenticity is printed on the package.

2018 PDS SACAGAWEA NATIVE AMERICAN JIM THORPE WA-THO- HUK + Proof

Background

James Francis “Jim” Thorpe (1888-1953), was born near Prague, Oklahoma, in what was then Indian Territory. Raised in the Sac and Fox tribe, he was given the native name Wa-Tho-Huk, meaning “Bright Path.” Jim Thorpe became possibly the most versatile natural athlete of the early 20th century. After a difficult youth, running away from school after several family crises, Thorpe came into his own at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Although the residential Indian school had a mixed reputation, Carlisle then had the services of one of the great early football coaches, Glenn Scobey “Pop” Warner and it fielded a national championship football team, led by Thorpe. At the time Thorpe was the core of the school’s track and field team, also coached by Warner, and the story is that Warner was reluctant to let his track star run the risk of playing football.

Thorpe was named to the All-American first team in 1911 and 1912. In 1911, Carlisle upset Harvard 18-15, as Thorpe scored all its points, four field goals and a touchdown. In 1912, Carlisle won the national collegiate championship. It beat Army 27-6; a cadet named Dwight D. Eisenhower injured his knee trying to tackle Thorpe.

In 1912, Thorpe represented the U. S. at the Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, competing in the new Pentathlon and Decathlon as well as two field events. He easily won both multi-event medals, finishing first in eight of the combined 15 events. His point record stood for two decades. In an often-told story, King Gustav V of Sweden, presenting Thorpe a special decathlon award, told him, “You are the greatest athlete in the world,” and Thorpe replied, “Thanks, king.”

Thorpe then embarked on an incredibly varied career with the public flocking to his professional appearances in football, baseball and basketball. He played for six teams in what later became the National Football League. In 1922, he became the first president of the American Professional Football Association, precursor of the NFL. In baseball, he played for the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves. He also organized an all-Indian football team, reuniting some Carlisle players. Today, sports writers rank him at the top of their lists of greatest athletes of the 20th Century.

The optional 2017 Native American $1 Coin

The 2017 Native American $1 Coin commemorates Sequoyah, inventor of the Cherokee Syllabary. The reverse (tails side) design features a profile of Sequoyah writing “Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation” in syllabary along the border of the design. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$1” and “Sequoyah” written in English in the field of the design.

Introduction

Sequoyah adapted writing to the Cherokee language by devising symbols for each syllable. His achievement is one of a handful of examples in world history regarding the development of an original writing system. After 12 years of work, Sequoyah unveiled the alphabet in a demonstration with his daughter Ah-yo-ka.

News spread quickly and Cherokees flocked to learn the system. In 1821, the Cherokee Nation adopted it as its own. Within months, thousands of Cherokee became literate.

Contribution

The Cherokee Syllabary gave birth to Native American journalism. The first American Indian newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, included editorials which embodied the Cherokees' determination to retain their lands, news on activities of the Cherokee government, as well as relations with the federal and state governments.

This written language helped create a dialogue between Cherokee Nation and the United States Government,

and assisted in the preservation of interests, hopes and struggles of individuals during a unique time in our history.

United States Mint Unveils 2020 Native American $1 Coin Reverse Design October 5, 2019

ANCHORAGE – United States Mint (Mint) Chief Administrative Officer Patrick Hernandez unveiled the reverse (tails) design for the 2020 Native American $1 Coin today during the Alaska Native Brothers and Alaska Native Sisters Convention at Alaska Pacific University.

The theme of the 2020 Native American $1 Coin design is Elizabeth Peratrovich and Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Law. The design features a portrait of Elizabeth Peratrovich, whose advocacy was considered a deciding factor in the passage of the 1945 Anti-Discrimination Law in the Alaskan state legislature. The foreground features a symbol of the Tlingit Raven moiety, of which she was a member. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ELIZABETH PERATROVICH,” “$1,” and “ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW OF 1945.” United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill created the design and will sculpt it.

“This coin will be a lasting tribute to Elizabeth Peratrovich and her relentless efforts to tear down the wall of discrimination against Alaskan Natives,” said Mr. Hernandez. “We will proudly produce this coin that honors her bravery and determination.”

Located near the U.S. Military Academy in New York state, the United States Mint at West Point manufactures the entire family of American Eagle proof and uncirculated coins in gold, silver, and platinum. The gold and platinum coins are manufactured in denominations of one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth -ounce. Silver bullion coins are manufactured in one-ounce denomination.

Historical Background: The 'Fort Knox of Silver' and the Newest Mint

The West Point Mint produces gold, silver  and platinum bullion coins.

Erected in 1937 as the West Point Bullion Depository, this was originally a storage facility for silver bullion and was nicknamed "The Fort Knox of Silver." From 1973 to 1986, West Point produced cents, and in 1980 began striking gold medallions. Shortly afterward, approximately 20 billion dollars worth of gold was stored in its vaults, making it second only to Fort Knox for gold storage. Today, it is also the major producer of gold coins.

The red letter date for West Point was March 31, 1988, when it gained official status as a United States Mint. Today, it is still a storage facility, but also manufactures, packages and ships gold and silver commemorative coins, and American Eagle Bullion coins in proof and uncirculated condition. Its Platinum Eagles have been very popular since their first issuance in 1997. In 2000, it struck the first ever Gold and Platinum Bi-Metallic Coin.

Because of its extremely high security, the West Point facility does not offer public tours.  Jeffs Coins information source US Mint.
