Seller: razorman2 (11,964) 100%, Location: Las Cruces, New Mexico, Ships to: US, Item: 382888853860 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Lot ancient Proto-money or barter money – ring money !! This lot consists of a lot of ‘coins’ found by metal detector. Some say these are Celtic from about 800 – 100 BC, but there is evidence that rings were heavily traded throughout the known world at the time. (Do not confuse these rings with more recent larger brass rings from horse harness.) There are different versions of Ethnographic or early money; boat or canoe money; dolphin money, hairpin money, cone money, arrowhead money, and early Chinese money with square holes. The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) contemplated on the nature of money. He considered that every object has two uses, the first being the original purpose for which the object was designed, and the second possibility is to conceive of the object as an item to sell or barter. Barter ring or Ring money was very popular in what is now known as Europe, and beyond Europe, as rings could be easily traded, used for ornamentation and could be secured to the person by tying or stringing. Ring money was known to have been made from lead, tin, bronze, silver and gold – of different sizes and denominations of which the values are unknown to us today, but very small rings of lower value metal ore must have been of very minimal value, such as to trade for a piece of bread or meat. Archeologists agree that rings were extensively used for barter in ancient times because hoards of them have been discovered with other cultural material. Rings were also used for personal decoration, i.e. Hair rings and Beard rings. Here, then, is my lot of ancient barter rings for sale. A ruler is used to judge the sizes. This ‘mini-collection’ would look good as a display in a small Riker case. You get 6 uncleaned pieces, including ‘interrupted’ and ‘spiral’ barter rings, made of lead, tin and bronze, as shown PLEASE VIEW ALL MY RELATED LISTINGS! Start this item at $ 12.99 !!
