Seller: bronz4yew (804) 100%, Location: Fareham, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 222926785864 Southeast type, LBA, 4 inch long, square socket bronze axe with internal hafting ribs. 102mm 265g.The original was from a hoard of clean axes of this type, in four different sizes. This was the third size (see comparison with Llyn Fawr axe and 'junior' axe in group photo)Made using silicone moulds from the original and lost-wax investment. The original was packed with tweezers and needles. The expanded cutting edge is an impressive piece of metalworking, showing the result of very dextrous hammer work. The 65mm curved cutting edge is effectively twice the width of the edge as cast. The internal hafting ribs are a valuable insight into the technical development of secure axe hafting. The Golspie axe and the Ferring Hoard axe have different types of internal hafting ribs but both come from a time when it was recognised that it was possible for an axe head to have an internal mechanical method to better hold the head to the forehaft.Freepost UK.
