This large example is pierced through the center, possibly for suspension with other gaming pieces and ease of transport. It consists of 14 facets, 8 small and 6 large. Two adjacent large facets appear to have letter carved crudely into them, possibly the letters A and either I or T. The other facets have been left blank. The surfaces are very smooth from use and wear, with minor chipping on a few corners smoothed down. Otherwise intact. Roman gaming pieces of this size are quite uncommon. PROVENANCE: Formerly the property of a private London owner inherited from her father who used to own an antique shop in London in the mid-1970s through1980s. Also, ex Bonhams, London, 2008.
