Seller: artemisgallerylive (37) 100%, Location: Louisville, Colorado, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 263839702847 LOT 32ASeller's Estimate: USD 1,100 - 1,650 Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd to 1st century BCE. A stunning redware pottery bowl of a deep russet hue with smoky grey firing clouds, the entire surface of its exterior impressed with elaborate decorations - an eight-petaled flower adorning the center of the base, surrounded by four pairs of evenly-spaced leaves, each pair flanking an elegant vase, with floral elements occupying the field. Moving upward on the piece, a narrow decorative band separates this lower section from a wide register of elegant birds above leafy festoons suspended between columns. These Megarian style bowls, being mold-made rather than thrown on a wheel, allowed artisans to produce vessels with intricate stamped designs that scholars believe are in imitation of more expensive metal bowls. They were made for people aspiring to wealth, or least an appearance of it.
