Large Barong Macan (Tiger) mask - Bali - Indonesia 1st half 20th century. ***** WORLD WIDE FREE SHIPPING ***** The Barong macan (Tiger) is used in various temple dances, including Calon Arang, Arja and at cleaning ceremonies of the village.
The mask has two handles at the rear bottom and is cut from light tropical wood. It has an impressive appearance and was used in Hindu ceremonies in Bali.
The Barong dancer kept the mask with the handles in front of his face and moved the jaws of the mask up and down, this made a loud noise, during this magical dance.
The two ears are parchment/animal skin. The mask is decorated with horse hair and pieces of animal skin/fur.
Condition: good condition with signs of use/old age. On the inside are some Balinese script signs. Date 1st half 20th century Length : 30 cm Height : 22 cm Width : 23 cm (with ears flat), 41 (with ears extended)
