Description: Important and unusually rare Lopburi Meditating Crowned Buddha, originating from a temple precinct in the historical province of Lopburi, one of the oldest occupied cities in northern Thailand, a city subordinate to the rule of the Khmer Empire, and subsequently came under the influence of their art and culture by the 13th to 15th century, a time commonly called the 'Lopburi Period' in Thai Art History. xxxxx Depicting a strong Khmer influence, the image portrays a meditating Buddha seated in the 'Virasana' pose, with hands overlapping one another in the 'Dhyana' mudra, richly crowned and adorned in jewels. Unclothed above the waist, covered by a mere jeweled necklace, he wears a long stylized sampot secured by a decorative belt. Typical of Lopburi figures the head is covered by a tiered cranial protuberance and enclosed diadem, with a band at the forehead. The face with downcast expression, ridged eyebrows connected above a prominent nose, double incised broad lips and small smile, and elongated earlobes adorned in triangular earring pendants to the shoulders. xxxxx A superbly rendered bronze statue, highly detailed, and naturally aged patina, master craftsmanship of the Lopburi Period.
