Seller: abca-c-sllc5hjngh (474) 100%, Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ships to: US, Item: 263912006739 LMLK Seal Impression - Type m2d Jar Handle Fragment. Two-Winged “lmlk mmst” Impression - The Iron II C Period (800-586 B.C.) Various locations throughout Judah yielded many four-handled storage jars, some stamped with the formula LMLK (i.e., 'for the king'). LMLK stamps often feature a winged sun disk or a four-winged scarab below the inscription, and inscribed yet lower down was one of the following: Hebron, Zif, Sokho or Mamshat. Hebron, Zif and Sokho are known to be towns located in the Hebron Hills, but the identification of Mamshat is perplexing. Some scholars suggest to identify it with Memshelet, one of Jerusalem's many names. The locations inscribed on the stamps were clearly the administration centers of Judah, confirmed as such by Hezekiah, king of Judah, prior to the Assyrian assault on the country. The excavations at Tel Lachish (Stratum III) confirmed that all the LMLK stamps were contemporaneous, and predate the Assyrian conquest of 701 BCE. Photo # 2 is presented to show what type of storage jars incorporated the "LMLK" seal impressions and is not for sale. The technical name for these relatively well-fired, ovoid jars with plain-sloping necks & rounded bottoms is Type 484 (of Class S.7a designated by Olga Tufnell after they were excavated from Lachish; Type 180 by Aharoni, Group IIIA by Zimhoni, Type 4A by Gitin. The ancient "king seals" discovered thorough Israel have sparked the imagination of religious leaders, archaeologists and historians. The clay jars are embossed with words in Paleo-Hebrew, a variant of Hebrew similar to Phoenician, that read LeMelekh or "To the King." These are often referred to in English as the LMLK seals, for the English transliteration of the letters. Material: Pottery, Provenance: Licensed Dealer in Israel
