Museum Quality Description: Extremely rare hardstone Khmer multi-armed figure of Ardhanarishvara, an iconic manifestation presented in a composite androgynous form of the hindu god Shiva and his consort Parvati, depicted as half-male and half-female, split down the middle, modeled standing in a frontal pose, with severed limbs, of which would have held Shiva's attributes. In Buddhism it is believed that all Bodhisattvas are asexual, they appear in various forms in different circumstances. In Khmer, the name is 'Preah Mae Kun Ci Lem', describes the Bodhisattva who can take the form of any type of male or female, human or non-human. Ardhanarishvara symbolizes that the male and female principles are inseparable, conveys the unity of opposites in the universe. The figure is superbly executed in traditional Pre Rup fashion, standing with four-arms outstretched, portrayed having a youthful torso unclothed with naked upper body. The male half has a flat musculine chest, and the female side has a well-developed round breast, and narrow feminine waist, above a well-defined complex sampot, half of which displays a short loins cloth, secured by a plain belt and neatly incised pocket folds, draped with a fish-tail central panel, while the female side is fashioned in a long sampot skirt, folded over a plain belt, elaborately pleated in vertical striates. XXX The face is indigenous to Khmer, both sides balanced with softly contoured serene expression, with almond-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief, a well-shaped broad nose, and wide mouth with incised framed lips, viewed with half-moustache and beard, neatly inscribed. A half third eye (Urna) is prescribed on the male side of the forehead. The head is covered by a conical hat enclosed by an interconnected diadem, tied at the back in a knot, elaborately embossed with rosettes and floral ornamentation throughout, with braides of hair woven in a foliated motif down to the nap of the neck. XXX The figure is classified as 'Pre Rup' style art, dating to the tenth century of the Khmer Angkorian Era, presented in its original unaltered and unrepaired condition, with detailing clearly visible. The relative smooth surface of the stone has a naturally aged patina, with mottled variations, showing even wear on the entire piece, and with weathering consistent with age. Data Observation: Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the environment in which they were maintained.
