The surface of this exotic pot is very textural, because the glaze has been applied in a very unusual manner, onto the bare clay. The effect is very beautiful overall, as it glistens. From my limited research, I have deduced that this pot was most likely transported by someone who came from Japan to the USA, because there are so very few available here, and which also supports the idea these were not made for export. For reference, It was also mentioned that an important collector, named Paul Bernat who gave much of his collection to The Boston Museum of Fine Art, described this texture as a form of Tenmoku. I don't own this book but, someone mentioned that this teapot is also nearly identical to one pictured in the book "Treasury of Satsuma" written in 1981 by Sandra Andacht, which I saw for sale on Amazon. Pot Details: This beautiful pot is in near perfect condition, no cracks or repairs. There is small glaze missing from tip of spout, and the underside of the lid has a small chip, and a few glaze bumps have small flea bites, but all are difficult to see. In my opinion they do not in any way detract from the over beauty of this pot. The original handle is intact, a little worn and missing a small piece, but overall it looks fine for over a 150+ years of usage and it adds a great presence to the pot, without it, it looks incomplete. I judge the age to be from the 1850's. I have read that Satsuma teapots like these were primarily used for Tea Ceremonies. The pot size is 7 1/2" from rear to tip of spout. The spout is fed by 4 holes. The body is 5 1/2" wide. The pots stands 5" tall with the lid on. The opening is 3 1/4" in diameter. The pot weighs 18 oz. or slightly over 500gm.
