ZenTsu are the highest ranking Fukuro Obi, as they have a full pattern on the front. Because they are so expensive to make, they tend to be very rare. This obi's design features traditional Edo period villages, mansions, temples, and scenery in exquisite detail. The obi's design appears to have taken different parts, big or small, of paintings by multiple artists from the Kano school of art. Most noticeably, the four seasons landscape painting by Unkoku Togan and famous views of Uji by Kano Eitoku. The Kano school was the premier style of painting from the late 15th century to 1868. The school was largely influenced by Chinese paintings, but they added bright colors and firm outlines to keep with Japanese traditions. They worked mainly for the nobility, shoguns, and emperors, covering a wide range of styles, subjects and formats. They were largely responsible for the new types of painting of the Momoyama period ( 1573-1614). Most of the obi is woven with shiny gold thread and as one would expect from Kyoto Nishijin, top quality. The obi is also signed. It is in excellent condition with only one minimal, barely visible wear spot and slight fraying ( please see picture). This obi is extremely luxurious! My pictures don't begin capture its beauty! It would be best for the discerning collector or as a magnificent decoration. But, it can also be worn with your favorite kimono!
