Sufi mystics renounce worldly possessions and subsist entirely off of alms or other donations from sympathetic worshipers. Sufism, of which the Dervish is a tradition, is a mystical school of Islam that focuses on the study of Islamic traditions and practices. This Kashkul was constructed in the late 1800s in then Persia, and saw usage as a Kashkul for a traveling Sufi before being sold in Tehraan. The item was brought to America in the late 1950s. The intricate carvings in the bowl depict the prophet Mohammed sitting and conversing next to the Sufi Tree of Life. The outer ring of the bowl is engraved with several prayers in Farsi. Item A10.
