Seller: aeonamaltheas (70) 100%, Location: London, London, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 302141113027 In antiquity, Illiad and Odyssey were considered the most important epics and broadly used to educate the children. The Iliad comprises of 15693 verses and refers to the last 51 days of the legendary 10 years war of Troy. The Odyssey consists of about 12110 verses and describes the 10 year homecoming journey of Ulysses. From ancient sources there are at least seven biographies of Homer. In the most predominant theory he is of Ionian descent and seven cities were in dispute about his birthplace. The prevailing one were Smyrni (today is called Izmir) and Chios. His parents names were Meon and Krithiida and it is said his real name was Melisigenis, because he was born near the river Melita in Smyrni. Allegedly he was named "Homeros" because he was blind, or because he was hostage of the Colophonians war with Izmir. upon his return, he toured the Hellenic cities reciting his epics, and therefore he gained great fame. However in a competition with Hesiod in Halkida, he lost the prize because Halkideans preferred Hesiod's work as he was praising peace. It is assumed the Ios is the island he died.In antiquity, apart from the Iliad and the Odyssey, attributed to Homer and other epics of the Trojan cycle such as Little Illiad, the Nostoi, the Cypria, the Epigoni, as well as the Theban poems about Oedipus and his sons, several religious hymns, an epic parody Vatrachomiomachia (the Frog Mouse War) and a comic story about a dumb hero, the Margites. In Homer also attributed two apparently falsified epigrams of the Palatine Anthology (VII 153 and XIV 147).
