A Herodian (late Hellenistic) to early Roman period pottery unguentarium. The type was widespread in the Near East for centuries, mainly used for storage of oils and other liquids, eventually being replaced by simple blown glass vessels in the same shape during the Roman period. It features a bag shaped lower body, long tubular neck and slightly flared rim. It is formed of simple buff colored clay. A thin layer of powdery lime encrustation covers parts of the surface. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
