Seller: clioantiquities (151) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US, Item: 131995407234 Herodian Period Pottery Unguentaria CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Herodian Period Palestine. DATE: 1st Century BC DIMENSIONS: 12.5 cm (4.92 in.) tall DESCRIPTION: Intact but for a chip to the rim, this pottery vessel from the Holy Land is made from pinkish clay fired to a hard buff surface, with a thin layer of dusty encrustation adhering inside and out. This example is Herodian in date. Simple pottery vessels of this specific type were widespread along the Levantine coast and Near East during the Hellenistic and early Roman periods but were gradually phased out due to the availability of cheap blown glass vessels in the same shape. Unguentaria were sold containing scented oils for use in funerary rituals as well as for personal use. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner. COMPARISONS: For closely related examples see John W. Hayes, "Roman Pottery in the Royal Ontario Museum" #s 335-344 Condition: See full description below., Material: Pottery, Provenance: Ownership History Available
