Seller: howardturner (803) 100%, Location: Ridgefield, Connecticut, Ships to: US, Item: 254333631158 This is a Hellenistic terracotta plate from circa 200 BC. It was found in Egypt and is from the time of the Ptolemiac Kingdom. It has a small 2" in diameter base as a foot with the sides of the plate flaring to an outward folded rim that is 6 3/4" in diameter. This is a serving plate that would have held friuts of all kinds at a table. It timeframe is near the start of Hellenistic Megarian ware either exported to or starting to be created in Egypt. It is in excellent condition. It has excellent use wear with lightly incised rings on the interior of the rim. It is made of red clay with a light black slip (somewhat poorly done). I believe you can actually see where the plate was held for serving as there are two worn thump print places perfectly spaced for being properly held. The underside exterior also shows mineral deposits from fingers. There is a small hairline crack on one side of the circular foot One side of the rim shows where hands have been. Purchased from private collector Toda Rabe from Israel in 2008
