SIR CEDRIC HARDWICKE - CONTRACT SIGNED 11/18/1939 - HFSID 299309 CEDRIC HARDWICKE Contract for his appearance in the film Tom Brown's School Days Contract signed: "Cedric Hardwicke", 2 pages, 8½x11. Beverly Hills, California, 1939 November 18. Hardwicke signs acceptance of an agreement with RKO Radio Pictures for his appearance in the role of "Dr. Arnold" in the film Tom Brown's School Day s. Hardwick is to be paid $5,000 per week for a minimum of five weeks, and to work one additional week for no compensation if production so requires. The weekly compensation of $5,000 resumes in a seventh and succeeding weeks, if needed. Other terms of employment are to be identical to those contained in Hardwicke's June 1939 agreement with RKO for participation in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. British actor Sir Cedric Hardwicke (1883-1964) , who was knighted for his acting in 1934, was called the finest actor in the world by playwright George Bernard Shaw. Hardwicke, who had appeared in a number of stage plays, including Shaw's Major Barbara, made his film debut in 1926 in Nelson and continued to make films through 1964, the year of his death. His long list of film credits include Les Miserables (1935), King Solomon's Mines (1937), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Wilson (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), I Remember Mama (1948), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), The Ten Commandments (1956) and The Pumpkin Eater (1964, his last film). Tom Brown's School Days, an 1857 novel by Thomas Hughes, inspired a long tradition of English boarding school stories, from Goodbye, Mr. Chips to the Harry Potter tales. It has been filmed several times, beginning in 1916, with the Hardwicke's 1940 version (featuring Jimmy Lydon as Tom Brown) perhaps the most successful. Staple at top left corner. Multiple staple holes at top. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: SIR CEDRIC HARDWICKE    See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (12,502) category.
