Seller: jj44450 (729) 100%, Location: Northville, Michigan, Ships to: US, Item: 263049797143 DESCRIPTION: A Han Dynasty Cocoon Jar (206 BC-220 AD). The form is a desirable type, but the great strength of this example is the design painted onto the surface. It has vibrantly brilliant cold-painted colors of red and white on a dark clay body. The distinctively plump, ovoid form of this jar, imitating the shape of a silkworm cocoon, has its original paint remaining on the body. Characteristic vertical bands with swirling cloud and scroll designs decorate the surface in a flourish. This jar is in excellect condition with with only a barely evident ancient repair to the lip (please see photos). This Cocoon Wine Jug is from the same era as the famous Terracotta Army. Again, the jar is in excellect condition and even the polychromatic paint has survived. DIMENSIONS: 12 inches long x 7 1/2 inches wide x 11 1/2 inches tall. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: During the time of Han Emperor Wudi (140-87 B.C.), fascination with the idea of the afterlife and the search for immortality reached a pinnacle. This preoccupation was given physical form in the distinct swirling decorations of painted Han earthenware vessels which were thought to represent the clouds Provenance: ex.
