RARE, one-page document SIGNED by CAPTAIN Henry P. Bowditch of Company E in the 1st Mass Cavalry during the Civil War .  Bowditch would receive his medical degree from Harvard College following the war and thereafter serve as the DEAN of the Medical School for a ten year period.

Document is dated February 20th 1864 and was written from Warrenton, Virginia – whereby Captain Bowditch lists a number of Ordnance related items that were lost when Union soldiers were taken PRISONER by the Confederate Army .

Document reads in part , “I certify on honor that the following articles of Ordnance + Ordnance Stores were unavoidably lost during the third quarter of 1863 in consequence of the men who had them in their possession being taken prisoner ”.   This is followed by a listing of the articles lost which includes – Carbines, Revolvers, Sabres, Cartridge Boxes, Cap Pouches, Holsters, Saddle and Saddle Blanket, etc.

HENRY PICKERING BOWDITCH (1840 - 1911) graduated from Harvard College in 1861.  In November of that year, Bowditch was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the FIRST Massachusetts Cavalry and served with the Union Army in the Civil War.  He attained the rank of Major in the FIFTH Massachusetts Cavalry, but resigned his commission a few months after the Confederate capital of Richmond was captured on April 3rd 1865.  Bowditch then entered Harvard Medical School where he received his degree in 1868 .  Thereafter, he travelled abroad to Paris, Bonn, and Leipzig where he furthered his medical studies under the direction of Claude Bernard, Carl Ludwig and others.  Upon his return to the U. S., Bowditch was appointed assistant professor of physiology at Harvard in 1871.  He was promoted to full professor in 1876, and rose to the position of DEAN of the Harvard Medical School, serving from 1883 to 1893 .  In 1887, Bowditch co-founded and was the FIRST President of the American Physiological Society.


CONDITION: document measures about 7 5/8 x 9 5/8 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT overall condition with a bold signature by Bowditch.  There are two horizontal folds and three small folds splits along the edges of these folds, the largest about 5/8’s of an inch in length.  Otherwise, NO other issues to note (see scans).
