We are going to use several new developments to start a worldwide organization of Doré collectors. We have just published the first issue of the Gustave Doré Newsletter. Thru the newsletter and our website – www.doreana.com – you can ask questions, give comments, and acquire a wide range of research files, reference books, and reprints of rarities with high-resolution scans. Our ultimate goal is to create a collector-friendly Doré museum or library of rare images, research files, and reference books. More involved issues can be covered in the newsletter or on the website. 1. Gustave Dore Newsletter. The first issue is available now thru PDF file e-mail transfer for $1.00. If you want a high-quality paper copy, send $2.00 + $1.00 shipping (U.S.) or $2.00 (overseas). GDN will have news, feature articles, and subscriber questions & comments. In the newsletter and website, we will propose many rarity projects for reprinting. With new high-quality print on demand, we only need about 100 subscribers to indicate interest to proceed with an edition. Dan Malan has been collecting and researching Doré for 30 years and now has over 2000 pages of original Doré research in over 500 computer files. We could publish dozens of advanced research and reprint volumes in the next few years, if subscribers are interested. 2. Gustave Doré: Annotated Catalogue of the Dan Malan Collection - This book should be available in April. It will be 8½x11 (175p) with 100+ illustrations. This is the largest collection of Doré books, prints & Doreana in the world, with an introduction by Eric Zafran, retired Curator of European Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum. The Malan collection contains several thousand Doré book editions, sets of prints, and Doreana, the borrowing of Doré art in hundreds of popular culture genres, like movies, music, posters, T-shirts, Magic Lantern slides, etc. It contains many great rarities. This book is much more than a list of collection items, with many pages of annotated research on the significance of titles and prints. This book takes up where Dan Malan’s 1995 book – Gustave Doré, Adrift of Dreams of Splendor, left off. What has been known about Doré was just the tip of the iceberg. Doré art is three vast fields in one: fine arts, published engravings, and Doreana. This is the first book to show the full scope of all three Doré fields. You should be able to order an electronic version in March and the book itself in April. As an introductory offer, you will be able to get the PDF file half off if you buy both. Here are quotes about Dan Malan’s collection and expertise from the back cover of the Annotated Catalogue: Philippe Kaenel, Professor, Director 2014 Musee d’Orsay Doré expo which drew over 300,000 visitors, wrote: “In my preparation for the 2014 Doré exhibition, I visited Dan Malan in St. Louis … Dan has devoted a lifetime to gathering items and information about Gustave Doré. No one else in the world has ever done this. I warmly recommend the publication and exhibition of Dan Malan’s remarkable collection.” Paul Lang, Director of Strasbourg Museums, introduced Dan Malan as a speaker in 2014 at the National Gallery of Canada by saying, “Dan Malan is the world’s number one Doré collector.” Lisa Small, Curator at Brooklyn Museum, co-author of 2007 Fantasy & Faith: The Art of Gustave Doré, wrote: “I owe great thanks to Dan Malan, scholar, author, collector, raconteur, and expert on all things Doré.” Eric Zafran, Editor of 2007 book, wrote: “Dan Malan has amassed a remarkable collection of Doré and Doreana and has private published several notable works on the artist, which like him are goldmines of information.” 3. Gustave Dore: Masterpieces of Art, by Dan Malan. This hardcover with dust jacket edition is part of a series by the London firm, Flame Tree Publishing Co., founded by Nick Wells, who was formerly with HarperCollins. Their company specializes in the Arts and Popular Culture. This book will be published in April. Copies should be available in April in Europe thru Flame Tree, and in America in early May thru doreana.com and in late June thru Amazon.com. This book will be a 128 page anthology, with 86 full-page and double-page prints of Doré’s greatest engravings, plus another 30 engravings in the 30p Dan Malan Doré biography. It contains many details not in any other Doré reference work. All the full-page illustrations in the book were scanned by Dan Malan at 1200 dpi, with the smaller biography illustrations scanned at 600 dpi, all from Dan Malan’s own collection. It is part of Flame Tree’s Masterpieces of Art series, featuring dozens of major artists. They also offer an edition of Doré's Dante. 4. Doré Bible Rarities, by Dan Malan. This is a newer development, but we hope to also have it available in the Spring. These Doré Bible engravings are by far the most popular set of illustrations ever made, with thousands of editions; so popular that from 1865-1900, it was published in large expensive folios editions in 25 countries. Most people think there are 241 Doré Bible engravings, like the very popular 1974 Dover Press edition, in print continuously now for 45 years. But there were actually 450 official Doré Bible engravings, plus thousands of re-engravings by unauthorized publishers; as Etchings, Steel Engravings, Lithographs, and Chromolithographs. This will be the first book to ever list the full scope of everything above. It will not reprint the common ones, as they are everywhere on the internet and from Dover. This will show samples of the unauthorized re-engravings, and it will show all of the rare official versions, most of which hardly anyone has ever seen. We show a sample of one of the unpublished official engravings in the newsletter. This book will have an introduction by Philippe Kaenel, Art History Professor and Director of the 2014 Doré exhibition that drew over 300,000 visitors. We do not yet know all the edition details. We also hope to publish another, more expensive edition reprinting several hundred full-color variations, if enough subscribers show interest. Full-color editions are much more expensive for these limited edition print-on-demand productions. Subscribers, you can tell us what they want published.
