A polychrome pottery wine cup (skyphos) presenting a classic silhouette, with a remarkably thin-walled body, twin horizontal loop handles, and a short, round foot, created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to the red-figure painting technique. The elaborate decorative program on this example consists numerous registers, including (from top to bottom) - tongues, cylindrical beads, dotted band, and abundant grape vines with a pair of hanging grapevines flanking a vessel in the field one side - the other side with ovalo, a dotted band, and flower blossom flanked by budded tendrils. The black ground boasts wonderful iridescence. Overall, a lovely example that demonstrates skillful technique and a refined polychromatic effect characteristic of Gnathia.
