In order to prepare this clock for sale the following work has been done: The original Golden Bronze Adamantine finish was cleaned and waxed. The movement was completely overhauled and tested. Missing Bezel Glass was replaced with quality beveled flat glass. Old gold paint was stripped off of the dial to reveal the original white/silver finish. This unique Seth Thomas Mantel clock has a date stamp which indicates it was manufactured in January of 1899 It is a wood case with a Golden Bronze Adamantine finish. It has golden metal swirls in a brown bronze color which results in a very nice effect still visible a century after its manufacture. The clock also features polished brass bezel and a dial finish which seems to be unique to clocks manufactured by Seth Thomas for the Chandler Brothers.. The feet, column capitals and Lion side ornaments have been cleaned to their original finish and waxed. This clock's size gives it placement versatility. It measures approximately 17 inches wide by 12 inches high by 7 ½” deep. The dial is 5 1/2 inches. It is lightweight for its size, and would look good on a large desk, table, shelf, or small mantel. Its basic brown/bronze color should fit in with almost any decor. Seth Thomas is well known for their “Adamantine” mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble. Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City, and was covered by U.S. Patent number 232,037, dated September 7, 1880. Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the Adamantine veneer in 1881. Adamantine is a very durable finish which ages extremely well when it is properly cleaned and cared for. To prevent fading and deterioration, it should be kept out of direct sunlight. This clock uses an original Seth Thomas No. 44 “Hip” 8-day time and strike movement. It counts out the hours on a coiled gong strike and sounds the half-hour with a single strike on the same gong.
