The first depicts a snake, a human with upraised arms, and a triform figure, likely a raptor's claw. The second is an arrow straightener depicting a vulture, snake, and fox, and was discovered at Jerf el Ahmar, some 70 miles to the southwest ofGobekli Tepe, and is within the same timeframe, sharing its iconography with that of the other site. Discovered at the end of the last century, and still being unearthed, Gobekli Tepe is revolutionizing our understanding of sophisticated hunter-gatherer-forager communities on the cusp of agriculture. A culture of hunting and animal shamanism, the culmination of traditions reaching back many millennia. The site's numerous monolithic pillars arranged in circles show a preoccupation with wild and dangerous creatures such as snake, vulture, hyena, and wild boar, with fabulous carved reliefs that are unparalleled anywhere in the world at this time. Gobekli Tepe was at the crossroads of the world in the 10th-8th millennia BC, until its complete and mysterious collapse, at which time the site was obliterated under hundreds of tons of backfilled rubble, raising many questions. Incredibly, parallels with the site's iconography and shamanic intent have survived to our own times, far away in native American cultures – perhaps not by coincidence. Plaquette 1 measures approximately 3.5 cm x 6 cm x 1 cm (widest points). Plaquette 2 measures approximately 4 cm x 4.5 cm x 1 cm. The pieces are made to order, so there will be a very slight variation in the appearance of the piece you receive from the one depicted. The pieces are coated for protection. In addition, you also receive a thirty-six thousand word essay / companion guidebook, The Rise and Fall of Gobekli Tepe, a fully-referenced and illustrated document explaining the history and iconography of the site, along with its many satellite communities, from inception to collapse. This will be emailed as an 89-page PDF file. UK postage, £3, 2nd class. International shipping, £5.75 by Airmail. Will combine postage for multiple items. Despatched within 3 days.
