A Must for Collectors Of Cairoware ,Mamluk Revival ,Persian & Islamic Art in General. 1800's Damascus or Cairo The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery.Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns. After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas.(M.Khaleeq 2011) A true masterpiece of silver inlay work ,beautifully engraved and thought out with stunning thick finely inlaid silver and with engravings on top of the silver. The silver & copper has minimal wear and the engravings are crisp. Even though this is Egyptian Revival this will have been most probably made in Damascus as the work is very typical of Syrian work and many items were made in inlay there for export to Cairo!! Also please look at the faces on the Egyptian sun god and the sarcophagi .These are typical of Judaica workers in Damascus. I do not know what they represent. Either kingsmanship or demons/Jinn. If you look closely you can see a child being breast fed in two stages !! Furthermore you see the goddess Nut arching over an ancient. There are Asps all over as well as hieroglyphic tablets finely engraved !! This vase can be stared at for many hours to figure out what is happening !!! A beautiful decorative piece.
