English sterling silver ladle 1803 with hallmarks on back of handle.13.5 in long with 4 in wide ladle.  This piece is from the estate of my aunt, who visited England regularly during the 1950's and 1960's. The description she left was "sterling silver ladle, with boar's head, George III 1803." Fine English sterling silver epitomizes the silversmith's art. Correctly reading English hallmarks aids in assessing the origin and value of a piece of antique silver. There are 5 hallmarks on the back of the handle. 1. Full lion facing left: denotes sterling silver. 2. Leopard head with crown: London guild mark. 3. Date letter: Letter H in shield denotes 1803. 4. Sovereign's head: may or may not appear. On this piece it is indistinguishable, but the 1803 date puts it during the reign of George III. 5. Maker's marks: denote the silversmith: WE/WF denotes London silversmiths William Eley and William Fearn. The Boar's head or Wolf's head mark on the front  of the handle is seen on other ladles and spoons of this period.
